The Atrium

Atrium was established in 1999 by its existing directors who are General Practitioners and a Counsultant Psychiatrist. Due to increasing demand, we now have in excess of twelve counsellors, supported by an administration team who will be able to answer any general enquiries you may have. Additionally, Atrium holds the Investor In People (IiP) quality standard, emphasising the company's commitment to the investment of its staff for future success and growth.

Our Philosophy
Atrium is a medically managed organisation, aiming to provide the highest quality counselling services. In addition the company follows the principles of quality record keeping and clinical governance that all stakeholders expect to find in a professionally managed primary care health provider.

Confidentiality and data protection

All Atrium counsellors abide by The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Code of Practice and Ethics, which ensures the confidentiality of counselling sessions. Other members of staff may need to access client files for administration purposes. All our staff are bound the company's own confidentiality agreement and the requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998.
Under normal circumstances no details that would identify a client or the issues discussed will be revealed, however, an Atrium counsellor will need to disclose personal information where there is a threat to human life or physical safety. In these circumstances, the client would normally be made aware of our obligations to break confidentiality.

Qualifications

The counselling team comprise of a wide range of qualified counsellors who hold enhanced CRB (criminal records bureau) checks and additionally hold a wide range of specialisms including:

  • nursing, within the community and within accident and emergency at hospital
  • teaching
  • domestic abuse
  • psychosexual issues
  • bereavement and loss
  • childhood abuse
  • self harm and eating disorders

DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHIES

Dr. Sourangshu ACHARYYA MBBS, MPhil (psychiatry), MRCPsych

Dr Acharyya is a founding Director of Atrium. He has been a Consultant Psychiatrist since 1988 and has been the Medical Director of Southend Community Care Services NHS Trust as well as a visiting Consultant Psychiatrist to the Priory Group of Hospitals and Charter Hospitals. In addition to training psychiatrists and other mental health professionals and general practitioners he has written extensively on psychiatry/mental health matters. Amongst his area of main clinical interest is the study of stress-related psychological disorders and their treatment.  

Caroline ELIAS MSc Chief Executive Officer

Mrs Elias joined the company in 2002 as Atrium's Business Development Manager and is responsible for the day-to-day business operations of Atrium. She is a fully qualified and chartered Marketeer with 15 years of business-to-business marketing within the training industry background.

Dr. Brian HOUSTON MBChB MRCGP DRCOG

Dr. Houston is also a founding Director of Atrium. He trained at Dundee Medical School, and has been a principal in General Practice since 1982. He is a member of the Professional Executive Committee of South East Essex Primary Care Trust.

Dr. Paul HUSSELBEE MBBS MRCGP DRCOG CHAIRMAN

Dr. Husselbee is a founding member of Atrium and took over the role of Chairman in 2000.  He was trained at the Westminster Medical School, London, and has been a principal in General Practice since 1990.
